Loudspeaker Basics
What is a Speaker Magnet?
(October 19, 2021) -- The purpose of a speaker magnet is to create a magnetic field into which the loudspeaker voice coil can interact. It's the attraction and repulsion of the voice coil to the permanent magnet that creates the motion of a loudspeaker. Loudspeaker magnet materials vary, but there are three main types: ferrite, alnico, and rare-Earth magnets.
What is Laser Scanning and Why is it Important for Speaker Testing?
(October 19, 2021) -- Laser scanning is important because it shows the vibrational behavior of speakers and enclosures to determine if it's matching the predicted behavior. This helps prevent issues during production and ensures a consistent sound for customers. Laser scanning allows for the ability to closely examine what a transducer does by reconstructing a frequency sweep into a 3D model at every frequency in order to understand the actual output of the system.
The Benefits of Using 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing for Rapidly Prototyping Speaker Materials
(October 19, 2021) -- 3D printing improves customization and reduces the time and cost of developing speaker materials. Additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping are sustainable and economically beneficial processes for speaker design and production. MISCO uses 3D printing for rapid iteration during prototyping. This allows us to get all of our designs down before we start cutting tools for injection molding or another manufacturing process.
What is an Audio Speaker Cone?
(August 16, 2021) -- The loudspeaker cone is really what creates the sound of the audio speaker and can be made with a lot of different materials depending upon the application of the speaker. Speaker cones can be made out of polypropylene, carbon fiber, acrylic treated cloth material, and good old paper—still one of the most commonly used cone materials in loudspeaker manufacturing.
What is the Acoustical Measurement & Testing Procedure for Speakers?
(August 16, 2021) -- There are a number of steps to the acoustical measurement and testing procedure and it's important to use top-of-the-line equipment, technology, and engineering for every step of testing audio speakers. Such as, the Klippel Near Field Scanner, which generates a full-sphere three-dimensional data set (versus the commonly used half-sphere). This is incredibly important data, especially to our end-users and to our customers who want to know how their system, with our transducer in it, is going to react within its home environment.
What is a Voice Coil?
(August 9, 2021) -- A voice coil is a speaker material that is like the heart of the audio speaker because, without it, it cannot operate. The material technology of the form, the wire, the adhesives that bind it all together, are all critical elements in making a voice coil that is durable and allows the speaker to perform the way the customer wants it.
Why End-of-Line Audio Testing Matters: How MISCO Tests Our Speakers Before Delivery
(August 9, 2021) -- End-of-line speaker audio testing is important because it's the cherry on top of a product after being carefully designed, engineered, and manufactured for a customer. Effective audio testing requires more than just a rubb & buzz. It’s important to measure impedance, resonant frequency, distortion, polarity, rubb & buzz, and frequency response, on every speaker. Consistent testing ensures a quality product is delivered. MISCO Speakers keeps serialized testing data for customers to review for free at any time and to avoid the cost and inconvenience of onsite inspection.
